Below is a list of activities carried out by the 50 States or Bust! team:
- In August 2023 Principle Investigator Peter Finn gave a talk as part of the 2023 Kingston University Big Read drawing on the project (talk 18:00-28:00 in the below video, though the other talks are also great):
- On September 13 2023 Principle Investigator Peter Finn gave a talk titled ‘Chat GPT Chat’ at the 2023 Kingston University Faculty of Business and Social Sciences Away Day on Learning and Teaching.
- On January 6th 2024 the full 50 States or Bust! project team will host a roundtable at the ’50th Anniversary Conference of the American Politics Group of the Political Studies Association. Conference program here.
- On June 10 2024 Principle Investigator Peter Finn hosted the event ‘The Challenge of AI to Democracy‘ at Kingston University. The event featured journalist Timandra Harkness, and talks from Professor John Craig, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Education at Kingston University and Honorary Secretary of the Political Studies Association, and American Politics Group Chair Philip John Davies. The event was delivered by the American Politics Group of the Political Studies Association and Kingston University, with the support of the US Embassy in London.
- In July 2024 the 50 States or Bust! team had the paper ‘Assessing ChatGPT as a tool for research on US state and territory politics’ accepted for publication in the journal Political Studies Review.
- On July 24 2024 a Special Episode of the 50 States or Bust! podcast featuring an interview Professor Lisa Magaña of Arizona State University on the politics of Arizona was published. Listen: here.
- On August 2 2024 a transcribed version of a project podcast interview on the politics of Texas with Calvin Jillson of Southern Methodist University was published on the USAPP site of the London School of Economics’ (LSE) Phelan United States Centre. Read here.

- On August 24 2024 article in Political Studies Review titled ‘Assessing ChatGPT as a Tool for Research on US State and Territory Politics‘ was published.
- On September 9 2024 the project article ‘Assessing ChatGPT as a Tool for Research on US State and Territory Politics‘ was trending on the Political Studies Review website.
- On October 12 2024 a Special Episode of the 50 States or Bust! podcast exploring the tool NotebookLM was published.
- On October 14 2024, Peter Finn delivered a session titled ‘Artificial Intelligence: Thinking beyond the headlines‘ for the British International Studies Association. This talk was highlighted in the November 2023 newsletter of the British International Studies Association.
- On November 15 2024, article in Political Studies Review titled ‘Assessing ChatGPT as a Tool for Research on US State and Territory Politics‘ was showing as having the highest Altmetric Attention Score of any article published at a similar time in the same journal.

- In November 2024, the full project team published a chapter titled ‘News from AI: ChatGPT and political information‘ in the report ‘U.S. Election Analysis 2024: Media, Voters and the Campaign‘.
- In December 2024, the full project team published a piece titled ‘Why voters should care about what ChatGPT tells them about history and politics‘ on the LSE USAPP site.
- In January 2025, Peter Finn delivered papers a titled ‘The Nationalisation of US Politics: What Generative AI Can—and Can’t—Teach Us’ and ‘Towards 26: From the 2024 elections to the 2026 midterms’ at the 51st Annual Conference, American Politics Group of the UK Political Studies Association held at Keele University.
- In February 2025, Peter Finn delivered a session titled ‘A note of caution on AI’ at the Kingston University Festival of Learning, Bitesize.
- In May 2025, the full project team published the piece ‘9 reasons you should be wary of generative artificial intelligence tools‘ on Descrier.
- In July 2025, Peter Finn wrote a post titled ‘The Make America Healthy Again report shows how AI can undermine the US Official Record, and democracy‘ for the LSE USAPP site.
- In July 2025, Peter Finn wrote a post titled ‘The MAHA report, GenAI, the Official Record and Democracy‘ for the Political Studies Association blog.
- In September 2025, Peter Finn published a chapter titled ‘GenAI Rockstars? Exploring the limits of GenAI via tour posters‘ in the Kingston University Compendium of AI practice.
- In October 2025 the full module team published the article ‘Generative AI and the Nationalization of US Politics‘ in the Journal of American Studies.
- The 50 States or Bust! project is a partner in the A Level Engagement Project of the APG. This project is funded by competitive funding from the excellence and impact funding of the Political Studies Association.
