Courts in the UK and the US have increasingly found themselves under scrutiny as they are asked to examine issues with deep political significance on which the country is divided. Whether Brexit or immigration policy in the UK, or abortion rights, gun control, or election policy in the US, the British and American courts have been at the forefront of some of the most controversial issues in modern politics.
In this event, two leading experts on the courts in each country are brought together to explore the challenges faced by the modern judiciary, and the perils and possibilities that await in the future.
About the Speakers
The Rt Hon Shami Chakrabarti CBE PC is a barrister, human rights campaigner and Labour Peer who has written and broadcast widely over recent decades. She was Shadow Attorney General for England and Wales from 2016 to 2020 and Director of Liberty (The National Council for Civil Liberties) from 2003 to 2016. Prior to that she was Liberty’s In-House Counsel and a Home Office lawyer. Called to the Bar in 1994, she is a Bencher of Middle Temple and the Chair of London’s Gate Theatre. She is a Visiting Professor of Practise at the LSE. She has been Chancellor of Oxford Brookes and Essex Universities and a Visiting Fellow at various others. In 2012 she carried the Olympic Flag at the London Games and served as a panellist on the Leveson Inquiry into the ethics and practice of the media. She is the author of three Penguin (Allen Lane) books. Following On Liberty (2014) and Of Women (2017), Human Rights – The Case for the Defence will be published on 2 May 2024.
Professor Steven K. Green is the Fred H. Paulus Professor of Law and Affiliated Professor of History and Religious Studies at Willamette University where he teaches courses in Constitutional Law, First Amendment, Legal History, Jurisprudence, and Education Law in the College of Law, and Legal History and American Religious History in the College of Arts & Sciences. He is the author of seven books on church-state relations in the United States, the most recent being the upcoming The Grand Collaboration: Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and the Invention of American Religious Freedom, published by University of Virginia Press, and more than 50 scholarly articles. Green has also participated as co-counsel in three cases at the US Supreme Court and has additionally collaborated on more than 25 amicus curiae (friend of the court) briefs at the Court. He has a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina and a J.D. from the University of Texas.
