Proposals should be around 150 words for single papers and 300 words for panels. Please note that proposals for all-male panels should be avoided.

The American Politics Group (APG) of the Political Studies Association (PSA) is the premier organisation for the study of US politics beyond America’s shores. 2024 will mark 50 years since the group was founded.

The group is based in the UK, with a strong representation of European scholars, as well as scholars from the US and further afield.

The APG invites proposals on any aspect of US politics. Papers examining contemporary US political institution or processes, US foreign policy, or US political history are all welcome.

Previous conferences have had a strong postgraduate presence, and we especially encourage early career scholars to present their work.

Please note: in addition to limited accommodation on campus, there is a Travelodge next to the university. London offers a wide variety of accommodation options.

Speaking about the conference in the context 50 years of the APG, Chair Philip John Davies said:

‘Help us celebrate 50 years of the American Politics Group!

In 1974 a small group of US politics colleagues, active members both of the Political Studies Association and of the British Association for American Studies, agreed that American Politics scholars in the UK had so much to discuss that they needed to carve out some dedicated space. Their invention, the American Politics Group, held its first conference at Keele University in January 1975, with about 20 participants and Watergate Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox gave the keynote address.

The experience of meeting a critical mass of colleagues in the same field, exchanging ideas, hearing the latest research, learning about the profession and its opportunities had such impact that some of us still remain enthusiastically involved half a century later.

The quality of that first meeting has been repeated annually since that time – even pandemic and lockdown did not interrupt the flow. Noted colleagues have delivered the keynotes. Scholars at the start of their careers have been encouraged by the APG commitment to listen attentively and comment positively on all the work presented at our meetings. Professors and postgraduates have worked together on APG panels, contributing to a community that has helped foster professional development in our research, publication and teaching careers.

January 4th to 6th 2024 will see the 50th annual conference of the American Politics Group, hosted by QMUL. London offers a range of accommodation to suit everyone, but whether you stay at the Travelodge next door to the conference site, take an opportunity to visit your London-based friends, or book yourselves into the Savoy the APG will, as always, make welcome everyone with an interest in American domestic and international politics, political history, government and society.
